Caring for Your Tile Roof
Even a roof as durable as one made of clay tiles needs some maintenance from time to time. So, it’s important to take the time to take care of them from time to time.
Cleaning Your Roof
Clay tiles need little maintenance, but in order to maintain their traditional appeal, you need to clean them periodically.
To make the task easier, use a power washer to get rid of dirt and grime. Just be careful not to point the nozzle washer too close to the tiles as this can damage them. Algae can be harder to wash off, however. A solution made of warm water and mild dish soap should do the trick.
Applying a sealant on the tiles can also help prevent the accumulation of dirt on your tiles.
Avoid Walking on Clay Tiles
Tile roofing is resistant against wear and tear, but they don’t handle external pressure very well. If you need to clear tree branches that fell onto your roof, be careful not to walk on the tiles.
Schedule Periodic Roof Inspections
Over time, however, it’s inevitable that your clay tile roofs will suffer some form of damage. Relatively minor cracks are not visible from ground level, and, left unattended, they can lead to moisture damage. That’s why you need to have a contractor inspect your roof periodically to prevent relatively minor damage from worsening.
Make sure that only an experienced and certified contractor replaces your tiles. Inexperienced contractors may make too many unnecessary movements, increasing the risk of damage to your roof. Experienced contractors, on the other hand, should know how fragile clay tiles are under pressure and would take the necessary precautions to avoid damaging your roof.
